Not My Flaw, My Feature

I don’t make one type of music. I make many types of music. I have no interest in making one type of music. This is not my flaw, it is my feature.

I don’t play one instrument. If I meet you on the street and you ask me what instrument I play I will tell you “all the usual ones.” This is not my flaw, it is my feature.

I was “classically trained” as a composer. However, my primary teacher Henry Gwiazda is anything but “classical.” He taught me to use intuitive processes, and to use “unmusical sound” as music. Beyond Dr. Gwiazda, my greatest teacher is Bruce Lee. As a lifelong martial artist I’ve studied Bruce Lee’s teachings nearly my entire life. I strive to be like water and to take what is useful and go from there. This is not my flaw, it is my feature.

I’ve been told by marketing experts that I should focus on one marketable genre. I’ve been told by marketing experts that I should have multiple stage names – one for each marketable genre. My stage name is Octathorpe, my real name is Sheldon Kessel. I do many things. This is not my flaw, it is my feature.
